CUSHION MONEY

I’m writing this from my home only because of my great lawyer. She saved my house and some cushion money. I’m not destitute here in Greensburg Bankruptcy took its tool on me. I lost weight, which I needed to do anyway, and lost some friends. Oh, and I also lost my wife. Bankruptcy can be a wrenching experiences. I nearly lost my mind several times. The first time was when I found out that the business was being embezzled, and that I owed everybody in the world. I had to immediately lay off employees that had been with me over 20 years, ruining their lives. I’ll never forget the way they looked at me. Like I was stabbing them in the heart. In a way I was. I was responsible. I had hired Harold as the staff accountant and comptroller. He gained the trust of many of the employees over the years — and me– but was secretly taking us all for all the could get. It must have started small, and he must have kited the money around, paying off Paul with Peter’s cash. That first night when I learned of this I went right home. Sylvia, my wife, was understanding at first, but as the days went forward and she realized what it would cost us personally, her attitude changed. She eventually packed up and moved out. Our kids were devastated. Thankfully, they are older and in college, and more or less on their own.
